Green was at the University of Calgary on Jan. The year-old Californian has also teamed up with Planned Parenthood Northern New England chapter , and Discovery on YouTube within the past year and a half, creating content for their channels. Her busy schedule has forced her to cut back on hours with Planned Parenthood, with whom she makes sex education videos for the channel A Naked Notion. Green is often asked how to do what she does. Green says one thing she wants to start doing is mentoring young people who are hoping to get started on YouTube or blogging, providing them with support to create their own resources. YouTube is not exempt from all the problems that are around us in society. She says the most important message she tries to give to her viewers is one of self-love, acceptance, tolerance and openness. Green uses her channel to promote the sex-positive movement. Green stayed behind for two hours after her talk to meet her viewers.

The line of people waiting to get into the auditorium was so long it doubled back to the doors of the room. I was quite literally within comfortable speaking distance of the ticket attendant even though I was at the back of the line. Green, who holds a certificate for date violence and rape crisis counseling, tackled the really big, heavy topic of rape culture well with a prepared, lecture-style presentation.

The group is now held in various forms around the world, with well over a hundred local chapters. The Philadelphia chapter of “Skeptics in the Pub” hosts bi-weekly group discussions on a range of topics related to science and rationality. There’s several things that set our group apart from many other skeptic groups out there:. That means that our regular bi-weekly meetups have a discussion topic and require some preparation and involve active participation. We also occasionally hold informal socializing events for our members called “Drinking Skeptically”.
We typically only address pseudo-scientific beliefs once they become widespread enough to cause major risks or interfere with major benefits to society e. Also, while we generally defer to the scientific establishment, we also occasionally act as critics when it comes to issues like funding biases, academic fraud, and the replication crisis.
My Sex Life… and Everyone Else’s
My decision to become a feminist set me on a bold new path in life. The moment I elevated the rights and dignity of the individual over the oppressive dictates of my childhood Christian theology, I liberated myself from the shackles of my mind. I participated in marches. I spoke out on social media. I wrote on my blog. I read Everyday Feminism. I came out as bisexual. I needed feminism. It empowered me to reject harmful, restrictive theology, and to affirm and accept my own sexuality. But after about a year of being swept up in progressive, feminist culture, I started to feel a disconnect.
Maybe it had something to do with me.

She had great visual aids a cardboard tube with a balloon over it and explained things in an understandable way. I followed her for a while during my phase of being a fan of various YouTubers. I kept some tabs on her over the years, and was familiar with previous kerfuffles about her work. She was bad at those topics, but was generally decent at things that were in her wheelhouse—sexual education and talking about feminism.
But this year, something has shifted. You see, we feminists are partially at fault for the choices Laci has made in the past few months. Ever since she became a pretty damn famous YouTuber, there has been a contingent of the Internet that has insisted on bringing up her past mistakes in any discussion of her work. While she was facing harassment that actually forced her to move houses, feminists online were also continually reminding her of how she had fucked up in the past.
She wanted to be part of it, and she struggled as a white feminist, but instead of finding a community that understands that we make mistakes, she found the end of a sword pushing her off the plank. I think—and expound at greater length about this in my forthcoming work—that it is possible to hold people accountable without also harassing them. This feels like it should be a simple statement, but in feminist culture, it is anything but.

May 24 is Pansexual Visibility Day. Much like Bi Visibility Day, when bisexual people remove their invisibility cloaks and instead don their fetching bi vis jackets, Pan Visibility Day is a day to celebrate and recognise those who identify as pansexual. The word pansexuality originally comes from Greek. This is different from being attracted to everyone; in the same way that a heterosexual woman will not be attracted to all men and a lesbian woman will not be attracted to all women, pansexual people will experience attraction to specific people and not others.
Being bisexual means being attracted to more than one gender, while being pansexual means being attracted to people regardless of gender.

Nuclear pore complexes have emerged in recent years as chromatin-binding nuclear scaffolds, able to influence target gene expression. However, how nucleoporins Nups exert this control remains poorly understood. Here we show that ectopically tethering Drosophila Nups, especially Sec13, to chromatin is sufficient to induce chromatin decondensation. This phenomenon is not correlated with localization of the target locus to the nuclear periphery, but is correlated with robust recruitment of Nup Elys.
Furthermore, we identified a biochemical interaction between endogenous Sec13 and Elys with PBAP, and a role for endogenous Elys in global as well as gene-specific chromatin decompaction. Together, these findings reveal a functional role and mechanism for specific nuclear pore components in promoting an open chromatin state. Interactions between the genome and nuclear scaffolds are known to contribute to regulation of gene expression and cell fate control, but specific mechanisms by which scaffold components influence genome regulation remain poorly defined.
One of the most prominent nuclear scaffolds is the nuclear pore complex NPC , which is known for its canonical function as a mediator of nucleocytoplasmic transport across eukaryotic nuclear membranes. Early EM images of mammalian nuclei have revealed decondensed chromatin preferentially associated with NPCs, interrupting the condensed heterochromatin associated with the repressive nuclear lamina. Such images have suggested a functional relationship between NPCs and open chromatin Watson, ; Blobel, ; Capelson and Hetzer, In agreement with the EM images, the majority of these interactions were found to occur at open chromatin regions, such as actively transcribing genes Casolari et al.
Functionally, several Nups were found to be required for the transcriptional output and regulation of at least a subset of their target genes. In metazoans, Nup targets include genes important for tissue-specific development, regulation of the cell cycle, and antiviral responses Panda et al. One conserved regulatory mechanism that requires Nups is transcriptional memory, a process by which genes are marked as recently transcribed to allow more robust transcriptional responses to future activation Light et al.
